Durham County Veteran Ladies' Golf Association

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Congratulations to Jessica Hall on winning the County Championship at Hartlepool by beating Shannon O'Dwyer at the first extra hole. The many spectators were treated to some excellent golf in what was possibly the best final for many years with both players playing beautifully.  We are lucky to have such talented players in Durham. Both girls are currently studying at Colleges in the US but have come throught the County's Junior programme and credit must be given to the County Association for the encouragement and support which they give to all our young players. Interesting to note that the youngest players in the Championship this year will have to wait 40 years before they can join the Vets!

BULLETIN BOARD (NEW)

With no social contact for the last three months, it's not been easy to keep in touch with our friends, so if you have news of members which you would like to share, please let us know and it will be added to the new Bulletin board.  Meanwhile, Dorothy Harrison would like to say 'Thank you' for the cards and good wishes she received following her stay in hospital and on a sad note, we have heard that Linda Boggon has died. Younger members may not have known Linda and her husband Malcolm, they spent most winters in Australia, but they were keen supporters of the Vets in summer!  Linda was good enough to play in the British Senior Ladies' Championship with Malcolm as her caddy; he had amazing eyesight, not only spotting Linda's ball but also those of other Durham players who had strayed from the straight and narrow.  Both Linda and Malcolm exuded happiness and their big smiles will be missed.

Sadly, two very well known Vets have died recently, Frances Watson and Florence Kinsella. Frances devoted her time mainly to the DCLGA of which she was both Captain and President but was a very generous supporter of our association, she was also the Ladies' secretary at Tyneside for about 20 years!   Florence Kinsella moved to St Andrews many years ago but her links wth Durham go back a long way; she played for the County team for many years and was the youngest County Captain in 1963/64, Treasurer from 1968 to 1980 and President from 1981 to 1984. Florence also found time to be the Captain of the Durham Vets in 1988/89 and was President of the North Vets in 1993/94. Both these ladies were from a generation who were dedicated supporters of womens' golf, possibly their contribution is not fully appreciated nowadays but their knowledge, experience and sheer hard work should be remembered.  Our sympathy goes to the families of Frances and Florence with a big 'Thank You' for what they have done for golf in Durham.

COMMITTEE UPDATE

The meeting of the Vets committee scheduled for 11th May took place by video link.  This was very successful and as a result, the committee is able to issue the following update.

It was agreed that all Vets' competitions arranged for this year will be cancelled due to the continuing uncertainty regarding social distancing and access to clubhouses. However, it is hoped to hold some form of social event towards the end of the season if conditions allow (fingers crossed!).

The Hon Treasurer very much regrets the delay in refunding entry fees and other payments. This is because our bank account requires two signatures to authorise payments and with the current lockdown, getting the second signature is not possible, neither will the bank allow us to make transfers by BACS. Elaine is continuing her efforts to resolve this problem.

As this year is going to be a non-event, most of the other County Vets Associations have given their Presidents, Captains and Vice-Captains the option to continue their term of office for another year. This does not affect our President Lesley, as her 2 year term of office ends in 2021. Our Officials have discussed the situation in Durham and have suggested that Captain Jennifer, should remain in office for 2021 and Vice-Captain Claire, should do the same. Both Jennifer and Claire have agreed to carry on their respective roles in 2021. However, for personal reasons, Claire does not wish to take on the Captaincy in 2022 and would like to postpone her year until 2023. We will be discussing this matter again at our July meeting.

Our long serving Hon. Secretary Eileen, will be retiring in November so a new Secretary is required at the end of this year.

If you are willing to help, or know someone who you think might be willing, please get in touch with Jennifer. This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

CORONAVIRUS COVID-19

In the wake of the COVID – 19 outbreak, England Golf has announced a number of key decisions relating to all Championship events and wider golfing activities. These have all been postponed until after 7th June.

Things are changing very quickly and we are in unprecedented times, we need to keep you, our members and ourselves safe. Therefore, your committee has taken the decision to cancel both Coaching Days at Sharpley G.C., the Annual match against the County Senior Men’s team  at South Shields G.C., the American Texas Scramble at Whitburn G.C., the Silver Spring Meeting to be played at Brancepeth Castle G.C. and the NCVLGA – Northern Championship at Bishop Auckland G.C. (19/21May) which we were to host.

Further information about re-scheduling some of these events and future events for later in the year will be provided in due course. We will continue to update our website with any new information so please keep checking. (We are also planning to devise some kind of online activity on the website, to keep your spirits up!  Ed.)

Best wishes and stay safe.

Captain Jennifer

BYE-LAW CHANGE

The committee was asked to review our Bye-Law relating to players winning more than one prize at a competition. After much discussion, the Bye-Law has been amended and now reads "PLAYERS MAY WIN MORE THAN ONE TROPHY AT ANY COMPETITION BUT MAY ONLY WIN ONE PRIZE /VOUCHER.  The prize/voucher with the higher value will be presented. The lower prize/voucher will be presented to the next eligible competitor."
