Durham County Veteran Ladies' Golf Association

TEAM v COUNTY SENIOR MEN

Hi All, Captain Anne reporting

We turned out for our first match of the season, a 4BBB against the Senior Men at South Shields on Sunday 14th April.

Our team was :-
  Helen Morgan and Sue Musgrove,
  Julia Elliot and Lynda Willis,
  Ruth Lindley and Sarah Hirst,
Chris van Buuren and Susan Handley,
  Lyn Davison and Barbara Conley,
  Marianne Moore and Jill Sheridan

Vice-Captain Jennifer Dixon and selector Cathy Bowerbank were also there to support our players and watch them play. I’d also like to thank the Vet’s rep Irene Austin who turned up to welcome us and see us off on the first tee.   It was a blustery day and as we got to the first tee the rain started to spit.  Not deterred, we just put more layers on and our team set off in good spirits to the task in hand.

We saw some excellent golf from both sides and whichever match we watched on the course both sides were enjoying the challenge and digging deep.  In the end though, I’m sorry to report that the result was 6 – 0 to the men.  Some of the matches were very close but in the end the men seemed to have the upper hand on and around the lightning fast greens with their superb short games.

Well played to everyone who took part and congratulations to the Senior men for their victory.  I’d also like to thank South Shields Golf Club for their hospitality.  We now start to plan our revenge for next year!!!

BRONZE TEAM MATCH 2018 V CUMBRIA

On Thursday 2nd August the Bronze team travelled to Stoney Holme in Cumbria for our Bronze Team match.  As we arrived it was very wet and dreary but when we started to tee off the sky brightened and the sun came out. Could that have been a good omen???

Our team played in the following pairs:

Julie Vaulks and Barbara Healy;  Sue I’Anson and Heather Hamilton;  Anne Deboo and Judith Kelly;  Kimiko Amai and Maureen Ewart;  Jane Moore and Elaine Marshall;  Maggie Myers and Lis Stevenson

Captain Rosie Preston and I moved around the course supporting our players and offering snacks and drinks from our mobile tuck shop. The course was tricky and the opposition was tough but in the end the Durham Team were victorious and we won the match by 3½ to 2½ .

Elaine Marshall was playing her very first match for Durham Vets and was awarded her County Colours.  It was a very happy smiley day with lots of quality golf played by both sides.  Thank you to everyone who played in the match, you were great!

RICHARDSON TROPHY 2018 MATCH 5 V CUMBRIA

Our last match of the season. The match was held at Brancepeth on yet another hot and sultry day and played over the long course which was beautifully prepared thanks to the hard work of the greenkeepers, despite the challenging conditions.

Once again we were plagued with injuries resulting in losing Karen, Julia and Sue from the team, but we had excellent reserves who stepped in. The match was played in great spirit; the Cumbrians are always good fun and a pleasure to entertain. Unfortunately for Durham, Cumbria got the better of us on the course and we lost the match 2/5. There were some good battles out there.
The team was:- Janet Burdis, Lyn Davison, Susan Handley, Sarah Hirst, Pat McIntosh, Marianne Moore, Rosie Preston.

I would like to give our good wishes to Karen and Jeanette who are playing in the Jamboree at Hexham, also to Ruth Lindley and Chris Pascal who are  President and Captain of the North. I may see you there supporting. Wear something pale blue as that is the team colour of the north.

RICHARDSON TROPHY 2018 MATCH 4 V NORTHUMBERLAND

Another fine win for Durham who beat Northumberland 4/3. Well done to the team, caddies and supporters. The match was held at Gosforth Golf Club with Northumberland being hosts. Unfortunately Julia had to pull out as she became injured during the practice round. First reserve Sue Musgrove stepped in at the last minute. Thank you Sue .It was a lovely day for the match with the games being played in great spirit. As usual this year there was a lot of run on the fairways, however the greens were beautiful and true. All our team played well and helped Durham to the win.

The key to the win was noted by the Captain, red meat the night before! We had a fab meal, steaks all round! After the match we had a superb buffet and wonderful imaginative, 'flower pots' for dessert. Thank you Northumberland for being excellent hosts.

The team was :- Karen Lee, Janet Burdis, Lyn Davison, Sarah Hirst, Ruth Lindley, Sue Musgrove and  Rosie Preston.
We all wish Julia a speedy recovery.

Anne Deboo and Barbara Healy

Pam Thomas and Heather Hamilton

Lis Stevenson and Judith Kelly

Kimiko Amai and Maureen Ewart

There was some fantastic golf played by both sides but unfortunately Durham were just pipped at the post and the end result was 2 ½ to 3 ½ to Northumberland. Two Durham players earned their County Colours, they were Kimiko Amai and Pam Thomas. Congratulations to them and I hope that they will be able to represent Durham in the Bronze team again in the future.

After the game we all enjoyed a lovely buffet at Blackwell Grange and headed home to put our feet up for a well earned rest. I would like to thank everyone who turned up to support the team and for members of the committee who helped the day to run so smoothly. Finally, thank you  to the players who represented Durham. You were great and I really hope you enjoyed yourselves.
