FAREWELL BETTY

 Members will be very sorry to learn that we have just lost another of our much loved older members, Betty Staincliffe died on Wednesday morning.  At the age of 90 (and 3/4 as she was proudly telling people last week!), Betty was probably our oldest Past President, serving in 2004 and 2005 having been Captain in 1987/88. An all round games player she played for the Durham Vets for many years and was good enough to play in the British Seniors' Championships to which she went with her friends Dorothy Harrison and Eve Hudspeth.  Many of our members will remember Betty as the Raffle Ticket Lady, always at the table with a cheery greeting and a happy smile, ready to take your money in exchange for a ticket. No Vets competition was complete without Betty at the table and no Championship was played without Betty and Dorothy keeping a watchful eye on things from their buggy. Some years ago Betty gave a Trophy for the best score during the Championship by a player aged 65 or more, this is keenly contested and will be an annual reminder of Betty's generosity and kindness. The Vets are indeed fortunate to have such stalwarts, always on hand and ready to help. Thank you Betty for everything you have done for us, you will be a greatly missed.
